We stand side by side on the mountainside, staring out across the Tangled Lowlands, which are even wilder and more remote than the mighty Komori.

At last, we have reached the end of the mountain range. Five days we spent trekking through the mountains after the dragon attacked us. Five days of hard climbing through the bitterly cold wind and snow. Five days spent huddled beside a warm fire at night with Kaim’s arms wrapped around me, feeling languorous and satisfied after he fucked me with savage intensity.

This man has possessed me completely.

Up here, he’s a different person, and so am I.

We’re free to be anything we desire.

I squint against the bright sunlight as I take in the dazzling landscape below. It looks different to anything I’ve ever seen. It’s impossibly dense in places and sparse in others. Tangled vines and rampant weeds knit together the swamplands and sandy marshes. A wide, serpentine river stretches from the base of the mountains all the way to the sea, splitting into a wide delta near the coastline.

So this is what lies beyond the Talamassa range.

I’m awestruck.

I can’t believe we’ve come so far.

Kaim’s hand snakes possessively across my lower back. “It’s flat country down there. Swampy and stinking hot in the summer. You are lucky we’re crossing in winter. At all other times of the year, the buzzflies are bad enough that they’ll eat a man alive.”

“Why would anyone want to go there? Of all the places to receive your payment, why there? It’s so remote. It’s a lot of trouble to go to just to get your coin.”

“It’s an inconvenience, but it’s a lot of coin.” Kaim shrugs. “My clients are Inshadi. Those were their terms. It’s built into my fee. This is the only place on the Rift Continent that they will visit.”

“Because there are barely any Midrians here?”

“Exactly.”

“They’re afraid?”

“Afraid?” A dark laugh escapes him. “They’re Inshadi. They aren’t afraid of Midrians, they just don’t want anything to do with them. The Inshadi have strange ideas about purity. They see themselves as being so far above us. They don’t want to taint their eyes with the sight of us lowly Rift folk.”

“They sound… strange.”

“To us, they probably are. But to them, we’re probably stranger.”

“I don’t think I like the sound of folks who think they’re so much better than everyone else. I’ve been through that already. It was not pleasant.”

“The fools in the palace?” Kaim’s lips come close to my ear, and his warm breath feathers over my skin, sending a pleasant shiver through me. “They are that way because they’re fearful of true power. Deep down, they know that what they have isn’t anything close to it.”

And you would know all about that, wouldn’t you? I seek his hand and entwine my fingers with his, caressing his callused palm, marveling at how this very hand, which is capable of so much ruthless destruction, can be so gentle with me.

Kaim is truly powerful, and he’s chosen to be with me.

He’s mine.

How astonishing.

But he isn’t invincible.
